about
Recorded some years back, when I was working with The Tapegerm Collective. The piece is more of a musical setting for a spoken word piece that was inspired by my love of espionage novels, particularly those set in the 1960s. While this is going onto a compilation of my work with Tapegerm, I thought I'd upload it by itself, given the situation at this point in time (December 2016.)

SPIES LIKE US
Lyrics by Steven E. McDonald
[Transmission begins]
Spies like us
living in our lies
Spies like us
hiding in the night
Berlin back streets
1969
The war was cold
All we had was time
Her lips were full,
her body sleek
What’s the use of doctrine
when the will is weak?
Spies like us
living in our lies
Spies like us
hiding in the night
Spies like us
Spies like us
Trapped like a rat
Wrong side of the wall
Men in leather trenchcoats
outside the door
Spies like us
taking the risks
We never were
until we cease to exist
Spies like us
Spies like us
Spies like us
living in our lies
Spies like us
hiding in the night
Spies like us
Spies like us
Spies like us
taking the risks
We never were
until we cease to exist
We never were
until we cease to exist
We never were
until we cease to exist
